  • The Olsen empire strikes back with luxury denim!

    39 days ago | Comment

Les twins Olsen are fast becoming a force to behold behind the scenes of this competitive fashion biz. With not one, not two, but three, yes three, fashion lines under their studded vintage belts, Ashley and Mary-Kate have thought it fit to add a fourth – and this one is all about the denim.

So, let us recap. The Row – that’s their slick and grown-up line, full of perfectly tailored jackets, sexy tube dresses and lots and lots of fash-pack favourite, black! Then there’s Elizabeth and James – with a slightly lower price point and a younger following, E&J is relaxed and fun, creating all those basics that fill the holes in your wardrobe. Which means slouchy jersey separates as well as cute luxed-up little beauties like bejewelled skirts or flirty floral frocks. Next up is Olsenboye – not for boys, but definitely for outdoorsy teen girls who like their clothes cute and simple.

So, with most corners of the market covered the next logical step would be luxury denim. Sitting under the Elizabeth and James umbrella, the collection is named ‘Textile’ and will be inspired by the denim already lounging in the girls’ wardrobes. Apparently one pair dates all the way back to high school (Ok, point one: can anyone remember how incredibly uncool the Olsens were as teenagers? Point two: anyone else feeling a bit depressed that they can’t fit into their own teen jeans?) But judging from the denim they've been wearing out and about recently (see above for all their fabulous bohemian glory) and names like ‘Stevie’ and ‘Hendrix’ being tagged to the new designs, we’re already hooked. Plus, if they’re half as flattering as the cut on their signature black blazers, our butts are gonna look amazing in these ones! [WWD]

  • Trying for a baby? Go alfresco

    44 days ago | Comment

A new survey, carried out by the Baby Show, has found, of the babies due to be born in 2010 nearly half were conceived outside the bedroom – in public spaces, in the great outdoors. Ten percent were conceived in cars.

And it seems relaxation can be a factor. Most babies were conceived on a Saturday, between 6 and 10pm. But Mondays have proved not so fertile – less then 9 % of 2010’s tots were conceived on that day. And holidays were a hotbed of conception, with 10 % of babies conceived in foreign countries.

This fits with a study out earlier this year, which found ‘gourmet sex’ improves a woman’s chances of conceiving. Remember those wild sexual exploits of your honeymoon period? When trying for a baby, you’ve got to relight that fire, as passion increases your chances of success.

Now for the science bit… A normal man produces 250 million sperm during sex. But, at the height of passion, this number can increase by 50%. Add to this the fact that the stronger the women’s orgasm, the greater the chance of the sperm reaching the egg.

'Couples who are trying to have a baby often mention that the sex becomes a bit of a chore, a bit mechanical and routine. That's the wrong thing to be doing,' said Dr Allan Pacey, secretary of the British Fertility Foundation, 'The sex should be as wild and thrilling as it was when they first met, when they weren't thinking about babies to give them the maximum possible chance of having one.’

Some couples might say, that’s easier said then done when you’ve been married a decade and after a ten hour day would rather get in your pyjamas then find a field to romp in. But we can’t argue with the stats… So, forget the advice granny gave you; post-coitus handstands, waiting for a quarter moon and the tightness of your partners briefs, if you want a (hot cross) bun in the oven by Easter, get out of the bedroom and go alfresco…

Or, do you think this is just another old wives tale?

The Baby Show is held from the 19-21 February, at the ExCeL centre, London.

  • 'An angel on earth': Rihanna and President Obama pay tribute to six-year-old who lost her battle against leukemia

    44 days ago | Comment

Rihanna and President Obama have paid tribute to six-year-old Jasmina Anema, who has lost her battle with leukemia.

Jasmina's story had touched people throughout the world, who joined a campaign to find her bone marrow donors in order for her to stay alive.

However, despite having a bone marrow transplant last year, Jasmina was admitted to hospital in New York on Monday with shortness of breath which was subsequently diagnosed as pneumonia in both lungs.

Stars including Rihanna and Kelly Rowland had lent their support to Jasmina in a bit to highlight her plight.

In a statement following Jasmina's death, Rihanna said: 'I am incredibly heartbroken that Jasmina has passed away. She was such a brave and special child.

'She showed me more strength and spirit that many adults I have met. I feel blessed that I was able to have her in my life and know that through her example, she has saved many lives. She was truly an angel on earth.'

President Obama, who granted Jasmina's wish to meet him in December, said in a statement: 'It is with great sadness today that Michelle and I extend our condolences on the passing of Jasmina Anema.

'Jasmina showed tremendous bravery in the face of adversity, and her ability to stay positive throughout her battle was an inspiration to me and to all those she touched.

'As the parents of two young girls, our hearts particularly go out to Jasmina's devoted mother Thea. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and with all who knew and loved Jasmina.'

Jasmina's mother Thea announced her daughter's passing on the blog she had set up to keep people informed of her progress.

  • Say goodbye to panda eyes: Hair-growth drug that improves length and thickness of lashes could spell the end of mascara

    44 days ago | Comment

British hospitals are recruiting women who are unhappy with their eyelashes to test a new hair-growth drug - which could spell the end of mascara.

Scientists believe the drug will mean the end of messy cosmetics by improving the length, thickness and darkness of eyelashes.

Women who take part in the trial will be given the treatment, worth £100 pounds, for a six month period.

The liquid drug is applied daily to the eyelashes with a brush and comes in a mascara-like bottle.

Doctors at six hospitals in the UK are staging the tests to find out how quickly the drug - called Latisse - starts to work and how long the results last.

It could also be used on chemotherapy patients who have lost their hair.

Clinical trials need to be completed in the UK before the manufacturer, who also makes the skin-smoothing drug Botox, can secure a European licence.

Consultant Parwez Hossain, who is trialling the drug at Southampton General Hospital, said mascara could disappear from women's make-up bags.

He said: 'The drug has been used as a treatment for glaucoma for many years. One of the side effects was that patients grew longer and thicker eyelashes.

'The company has now reformulated their product so it can be applied directly to the eyelashes in the same way as a mascara.

'The study I'm working on hopes to find out how long patients need to use the drug to improve their lashes and to see how long the effects last when you stop using it.

'It already has a drug licence in the United States, where women are using it as a cosmetic procedure.

'It now has to undergo clinical trials here to get a European licence. The results I have seen from the United States have been impressive.

'Many women that have had the treatment look like they are wearing mascara when they are not and that is our ultimate aim.

'We need more women to join our trials.'

Women can use their normal mascara on top of Lattisse while waiting for their lashes to thicken.

The drug is said to make lashes 25 per cent longer, 106 per cent thicker and 18 per cent darker after 16 weeks.

Makeup artist Vanessa Pridige, who has worked on West End shows and magazine photoshoots, said many women will love the new treatment.

She said: 'Long, dark and thick eyelashes are great because they make your eyes look bigger and open them up. When my friends and clients only have time to apply one piece of makeup in the morning most reach for the mascara.

'But it can be messy and if you do not wear waterproof mascara it can run down your face and look very unattractive if you swim, sweat, cry or get caught in the rain.

'The panda-eye look is not good.'

She added: 'Women usually spend between ten and 20 pounds on a good bottle of mascara, which will last for about three months.

'If they don't like mascara this may get eyelash extensions but they cost 75 pounds, take an hour to put in and only last for about six weeks.

'Whether women will be prepared to spend 100 pounds on the new drug will depend on how long it lasts.

'I'll be interested to see the results of the trials.

'The drug could be the answer to many women's prayers but I think I'll still be working with mascara for years to come.'

The worldwide market for mascara is around three billion pounds a year.

  • 'Insulting and irresponsible': Nicole Richie blasts claims she suffered from an eating disorder

    44 days ago | Comment

These sizzling pictures of Nicole Richie give little clue to the weight issues which have plague her recent years.

With a tiny Size Zero frame giving her a severe case of 'lollipop head' syndrome, fans had become concerned for her health, insisting she had become too thin.

But Nicole, who is at her curviest best after having two children with boyfriend Joel Madden, has come forward to reassure fans she has always been healthy.

The 28-year-old also took the opportunity to blast critics who had accused her of suffering from an eating disorder.

She said: 'I felt it was a little unfair to say someone has an eating disorder when they don’t. It’s extremely insulting and irresponsible.

‘An eating disorder is serious and it’s a disease.'

The reality television star, who is the adopted daughter of singer Lionel Richie, dropped to Size Zero before falling pregnant with her first child.

At her skinniest, she was pictured on a beach in 2006 and became the reluctant poster girl for Hollywood's obsession with weight loss.

But since daughter Harlow's arrival nearly two years ago, she has looked altogether healthier.

Her second child, son, Sparrow, was born four months ago and Mother Nature's impact has been even more dramatic.

Nicole previously revealed she is naturally skinny, and sometimes finds it difficult to put on weight.

She said: 'I think when you see me in person, you see that I'm, like, five foot one - I’m a small person.

'When I was heavier, everyone said I was too heavy. You can't win in the public eye and I find it really hard. So I ignore it now, I really do.

'The only time it bothered me was when I was in a store trying on shoes and these girls came up to me - they were probably like 13 or 14 - and their mother came over, and she said, "Are you taking care of yourself, because my girls think that you're not." That was upsetting.'

Nicole is currently preparing to kickstart her acting career as the star of a new TV sitcom.

Having previously appeared in reality series The Simple Life, Nicole will return to the small screen for a half-hour show, which she pitched to bosses at U.S. channel ABC earlier this year.

She will also produce the series, in which she stars as a working woman juggling her family and love life.

  • Kate Moss visits Paris Fashion Week with the perfect accompaniment...her very own fashion designer

    45 days ago | Comment

As one of the world's most famous supermodels a visit to Paris Fashion Week is bound to be something a little bit special.

And for Kate Moss the star-studded event was an opportunity to catch up with her old friend Stella McCartney.

The 36-year-old Croydon-born model paid a visit to the French capital to check out Stella's autumn/winter ready-to-wear collection, which was shown at the British embassy.

Designer friend: The supermodel spent time catching up with Stella at her spring/summer ready-to-wear show at the British Embassy in Paris

Happy days: Kate can't stop laughing as she leaves the Ritz hotel en route to Stella McCartney's show

Kate looked fresh faced and cheery as she made her entrance at the show wearing a green jacket over a black top, jeans and suede boots.

She topped off the smart ensemble with a studded belt and a compact black shoulder bag.

Accompanied by her fiancé Jamie Hince, 40, Kate took time out to have a catch up with her designer friend whom she has modelled for in the past.

In fact, Kate took part in Stella's graduate show when she was still a mere student at St Martin's College of Art and Design in London.

The show also included appearances from Naomi Campbell and Yasmin Le Bon.

Now, some 15 years later, Stella is an accomplished designer, displaying her wares across the globe attracting a huge following.

Last year Kate modelled for Stella's Spring collection in a campaign shot by Ryan McGinley in Puerto Rico.

Kate Moss and her fiancé are staying at the Ritz hotel in Paris. The couple got engaged earlier this month when The Kills rocker proposed to her on her birthday.

She began dating Hince just three months after she finished with Babyshambles star Pete Doherty in 2007, and the couple have had a somewhat turbulent relationship.

A friend said of the proposal: 'Kate was stunned, Jamie called her up and told her not to come home. He said he was flying out to Mustique.

'He had carefully picked a ring and chose her birthday to propose.

'It was the first time they had been alone together in quite a while and it was extremely emotional.

'Kate and Jamie are in a very good place, they already live together and this is the next step to settling down for good.'
